How to Style a Cardigan

It’s sweata weatha! Then again if you’re me, it’s always sweater weather. But today we’re talking about cardigans. They’re a wardrobe staple all year round, and not only can they transform any outfit, there are so many ways to style them. Whether you’re looking to elevate a look with something chic or go cool and casual, they are functional and easy to wear. There are so many styles from chunky to cropped to long, and especially as the weather get’s chiller, cardigans are a practical and cozy layer to keep you warm. Today I’m sharing different ways to style a cardigan and some of my favorite options if you’re looking to add one to your wardrobe!

How To Style A Cardigan

Dress it up

Pair a long cardigan with heeled booties and skinny jeans or faux leather leggings to dress it up. Or pair a classic ballet cardigan with trousers and a loafers.

Go monochrome

I love a monochrome moment and a simple cardigan with similar toned pants is so chic. This look with a white cardigan and white jeans is so classic and stylish.

Wear it casual

Keep it easy and comfy in a cardigan with jeans and a tee shirt. Pair a chunky cardigan with straight leg jeans and sneakers or try boyfriend jeans with a fitted tee and classic button cardigan.

Layer for fall and winter

Get super cozy for cooler temps and layer a cardigan over a lighter knit sweater or wear it under a cozy camel coat. For warmer months try a simple silk tank under a cozy cashmere cardigan.

Borrow from the boys

Some of my favorite sweater finds are from the men’s section. If you’re looking for something oversized, check out the men’s styles (especially if you’re thrift shopping!).

Skinny jeans and heeled booties

One of my favorite outfits is a cotton cardigan with skinny jeans and heeled booties. Pair it with a classic camel coat for winter and an oversized scarf to keep you cozy.

straight leg jeans and sneakers

Hello weekend uniform. Keep it cool and casual with straight leg jeans and sneakers. Add a crossbody bag or oversized tote and cozy scarf.

cashmere cardigan outfit

I love cashmere especially for fall and winter. Keep it classic with a cashmere button down cardigan and trousers with loafers. Or you can pair a cropped cardigan with high rise jeans and sneakers.

blazer and boots for workwear

A simple cardigan is the perfect layering piece under a classic blazer. Wear it with trousers or wide leg pants for work. Pair your outfit with ankle boots or flats.

oversized cardigan outfit

For the ultimate cozy fall and winter style throw on a cozy oversized cardigan in a chunky knit. Pair it with jeans and a tee. Just add loafers or try leggings and boots.

silk dress or maxi skirt

Go elegant and chic in a silk maxi dress or skirt paired with a classic cardigan. Pair it with a low heeled bootie or keep it casual in converse.

Hi Jess! Love your style and the brands you support! I was wondering if you’d consider doing a post about ‘date night’ or ‘evening’ styles from the ethical brands you love? I struggle with what to wear for a night out with my husband or friends that is dressier than my typical sweater and jeans attire. I have a Madewell leather jacket that I never wear because I struggle to find good blouses to wear underneath.

I love wearing cardigans 🤩 Monochromatic ones are my favorite because they can be more easily paired with clothing pieces of different colors. This orange one (https://silklaundry.com.au/collections/women-knit-cardigans/products/cropped-cardigan-fire-lily?variant=41918224269488) is my favorite and most worn cardigan piece – suitable for every season.
